X. CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

X.a. Advising

Academic advising is an important component of a student’s education and is shared among professional academic advisors and faculty.

The School’s Academic Advisor coordinates School-wide advising activities that include:

  • Recruitment coordination and liaison work with the Office of Recruitment and Admission and K-State Scholars;

  • Transfer equivalency records; and

  • Summer Orientation and Enrollment.

Students meet with an academic advisor at least once each semester to review progress toward their degree and prepare for enrollment. Advising assignments are based on the student’s academic program:

  • Bachelor of Music & Bachelor of Music Education: MTD Academic Advisor

  • Bachelor of Arts in Music or Theatre and Bachelor of Science in Theatre: Academic Advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office

  • Dance Secondary Major, Minor, and Performance Certificate: Lead Dance Advisor

  • Master of Music: Director of Graduate Studies in Music

  • Master of Arts in Drama Therapy: Director of Drama Therapy

Faculty should refer students to the appropriate academic advisor when questions involve degree requirements, enrollment, transfer coursework, or other matters requiring official academic advising.

X.b. Faculty Expectations

Faculty should review the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance Personnel and Evaluation Documents for expectations regarding teaching and instructional effectiveness. These expectations include delivering clear and consistent instruction aligned with stated course goals, learning outcomes, and student achievement.

Faculty should maintain reasonable availability for students through posted office hours, appointments, or other appropriate means of communication.

X.c. Course Syllabi

Faculty must prepare a syllabus for each course taught and submit required syllabi to the university’s designated repository by the tenth day of the semester. A syllabus may address multiple sections when appropriate, including cross-listed courses or courses offered at multiple levels, such as applied music lessons.

X.d. Academic and Final Examination Calendars

Faculty are responsible for following the official Academic Calendars and Final Examination Schedule.  Academic calendars approved by the Kansas Board of Regents are available through the Office of the Registrar. Final examination information is available through KSIS and other university resources.

X.e. Honor and Integrity System

Faculty and students are expected to uphold the principles of the K-State Honor and Integrity System.  Suspected violations should be addressed through the university’s established Honor and Integrity System procedures and reporting process. Faculty should consult current university guidance regarding when and how suspected violations should be reported.

X.f. Student Grievances and Grade Appeals

Procedures for student grievances and grade appeals are established in the University Handbook.  Students and instructors should first make reasonable efforts to resolve concerns regarding grades directly. If a grade-related grievance cannot be resolved between the student and instructor, the student may submit a written appeal to the School Director, who will review the matter and facilitate the School-level process.

If the matter is not resolved at the School level, the student may pursue additional appeal procedures through the College of Arts and Sciences and, when applicable, the appropriate university grievance body.  Faculty and students should consult the current University Handbook for specific procedures, timelines, and appeal rights.

X.g. Assessment of Student Learning

Systematic assessment of student learning supports student achievement, curricular improvement, and program effectiveness.  Faculty should use appropriate methods of assessment that allow students to demonstrate achievement of course and program learning outcomes. Assessment may include both formative and summative measures and should provide useful information for students, faculty, and programs.

Program Directors for Music, Theatre, and Dance, or their designees, coordinate program-level assessment activities in consultation with the University Office of Assessment.

Program assessment reports are submitted according to the university’s established schedule and generally include:

  • Student learning outcomes assessed during the reporting period;

  • Methods used to assess each outcome;

  • Assessment results;

  • Analysis and interpretation of those results; and

  • Actions or plans for improvement based on the findings.

Faculty are expected to contribute assessment information requested by their program and participate, as appropriate, in discussions of assessment findings and curricular improvement.

X.h. Course, Participation, and Enrollment Requirements

Faculty are responsible for ensuring that course requirements and curricular expectations are consistent with approved university curriculum and policies.

  1. Course and co-requisite requirements: Requirements that students enroll in a particular course or co-requisite must be established through KSIS and CourseDog, otherwise it is not a requirement. Faculty may not independently create additional curricular requirements that have not been formally approved.

  2. Activities outside scheduled class time: Performances may be required outside a course’s KSIS-designated meeting time and are treated as University Excused Absences. Per university policy, rehearsals, sectionals, field trips, attendance at events, or other activities outside the designated course time may be encouraged but may not be required.

  3. Recommended coursework and experiences: Faculty may encourage students to participate in additional courses, ensembles, external performances, professional experiences, or other opportunities that support their educational or career goals, but may not treat them as requirements unless they are part of the formally approved curriculum, including approved prerequisites or co-requisites.

  4. Student enrollment choice: Faculty may advise or encourage students to enroll in particular courses or sections but may not compel enrollment. Students retain the right to choose whether and where to enroll, subject to course eligibility and university policies.
