V. Recruitment & Scholarships

Recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students is vital for the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance to fulfill its mission. Although certain faculty and staff may have specific roles and duties associated with recruitment, every member of the faculty and staff are integral to the success of this endeavor. Prospective student information is found on the faculty portal. Faculty are expected to use the information on the portal to recruit students for their programs and studios and to collaborate with the Recruiting Office Director throughout the process.

All future music, theatre and dance students must both apply for admission to K-State and to their primary area within the School. The priority deadline for undergraduate students to apply to K-State for academic scholarships is February 1. Faculty can direct interested students to MTD’s Audition and Scholarship webpage.

Music, Theatre, and Dance scholarships are available in all performance areas and are in addition to academic scholarships. Prospective students may use the Future Student Form to apply and audition for music, theatre, and dance scholarships.

Scholarship audition days for Music and Dance are held on campus during the first week of February.

V.a. MUSIC RECRUITMENT AND SCHOLARSHIPS

All students who would like to enroll in an applied music studio (majors, minors, and non-majors) must be accepted into the studio by the appropriate faculty member through an audition. The music program hosts a number of opportunities for students to audition. Through these auditions, students may also be considered for a School of Music, Theatre, and Dance Scholarship. Ensemble areas (band, choir, jazz, and orchestra) also offer a number of scholarships to students participating in those ensembles. Students may schedule an audition by visiting MTD’s Audition and Scholarship webpage.

V.a.i. MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP PROCESS

  • The Music program offers scholarships, which are typically:

    • Continuous for eight semesters if students maintain minimum levels of academic achievement and program participation. Scholarships for minors, non-majors, or graduate students may be less than eight semesters.

  • Deadlines:

    • February 1: the School Director determines the amount of funds available for new scholarship offers for the following academic year.

    • February 15: all auditions for scholarship consideration must be completed and reported to the applicable Division Chair. The School Director will also identify all prospective music students who have been offered a central university scholarship to help guide scholarship decisions.

    • Mid-February: the School Director will make decisions regarding scholarship offers.

    • March 1: the School Director will send a "Music Scholarship Acceptance Form" to students receiving scholarship offers

    • Mid-March-May 1: Faculty and the Academic Advisor periodically correspond with students, encouraging them to commit to enrolling and returning the “Music Scholarship Acceptance Form.” If students receive scholarship offers from other institutions that are greater than K-State’s, please inform the School Director so that they can consider raising the initial scholarship offer. Students cannot be required to commit to accepting the scholarship offer before May 1.

    • June 1: The School Director will assign accepted scholarships to specific accounts.

V.a.ii. MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP RENEWAL

Per the “Music Scholarship Acceptance Form,” most music scholarships are automatically renewable for multiple semesters if students meet the criteria as described in the form. No scholarship can be renewed for more than eight semesters. Throughout the Academic Year, the School Director will monitor whether scholarship students are meeting the criteria of their scholarship contracts.  Students who are not meeting the contract requirements may have their scholarships revoked.

V.b. THEATRE RECRUITMENT AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Interested students are encouraged to complete the Future Student Form. Students may upload video and/or portfolio presentations through this form, allowing faculty members to review materials for scholarship consideration.

Incoming students admitted to Kansas State University for a BA or BS in Theatre who complete the required form and meet eligibility criteria may qualify for the K-State Theatre Newcomer Award, a $500 scholarship renewable for up to four years (totaling $2,000).

Additionally, the Lizbeth Slinkman Scholarship is available to an incoming freshman from a local high school and is renewable for the sophomore year.  Prospective students may submit a video and/or portfolio presentation or be interviewed by faculty as part of the scholarship consideration process.

Continuing students may reapply for scholarships annually, with decisions made by full-time theatre faculty. Scholarship contracts are issued by the Associate Director for Theatre, and more information on continuing scholarships can be found here.

V.c. DANCE RECRUITMENT AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Dance scholarships are available to students who are enrolled in the Secondary Major in Dance and the Human Experience and commit to participating in dance productions each semester. Prospective students may apply using the Dance Scholarship Application and either submit video footage or participate in an on-campus scholarship audition either on Dance Day or Dance Scholarship Audition Day.

All dance faculty are expected to participate in recruitment through their professional and community connections, facilitating prospective student visits, welcoming visiting students in their classes, and participating in both Dance Day and Dance Scholarship Audition Day. Dance scholarships are offered for a period of one year. Students may re-apply annually as long as
